1831 1831 Lower Canada census lists the family of Joseph VALENTIN dit Gregoire (père) living near Ruisseau Laplante. There are 10 members in the household and he earns a living by farming 60 of his 90 arpents of land on the Seigneurie of St-Ours.

The family of André DUHAMEL live near Ruisseau Laprade in St-Ours. He earns a living by farming 36 of his 60 arpents. There are eight people in the household.

1832 A cholera epidemic spreads to St-Ours. During that summer there were 46 deaths.
1834 Death of the Seigneur de St-Ours, Roch-Louis dit Charles de Saint-Ours. His part of the seigneury passes to his son, François-Roch de Saint-Ours, who re-unites the other parts of the seigneury previously held by other descendants of Pierre de St-Ours.
1836 Saint-Ours becomes the county seat for Richelieu.:

1844 Canals and locks are constructed on the Richelieu river as part of works to connect Montreal to New York. The locks at St-Ours complete the project. The following year a mill is constructed by Mme de St-Ours to refine flour and card wool.
1845 06 08 The municipality of the parish of St-Ours is formed.
1846 The Canada-U.S. boundary is completed.
1847 The population of St-Ours is 3,600 and there are 6 schools with 400 boys and 300 girls as students.
1847 02 06 The village of St-Ours becomes a separate municipality. and later that year, the municipality of the parish of St-Ours is dissolved.

1848 10 10 A group of village leaders meet to form a volunteer fire brigade with the new pumper purchased by the village.
1849 As a result of the opening of the Saint-Ours Canal in 1849, boats were able to bypass the final obstacle on the waterway between Montreal and New York. Called the tenth lock on the Richelieu, the canal would prove indispensable to international, regional and local trade for over a century.

1850 Severe spring floods submerged the St-Ours locks. Although the Saint-Ours lock was opened to navigation late in 1839, it only began normal operation in 1852. Severe spring floods in 1850 submerged the lock, and a project to raise the walls of the canal by five feet lasted through most of 1851.

St-Ours parishioners petition for a new cemetary – the diocese recommends a site nearby but it’s pointed out to them that the location floods every spring. After much discussion, the present site is consecrated.

1866 Controversy about costs, financing, rebuilding vs repairing, still surrounds the plans to repair the church. The Diocese sends an investigator to get to the facts. The diocese opts to repair the church.
1866 St-Ours town council issues a bylaw granting liquor licenses to innkeepers despite a growing Temperance movement. Conflicting interests are at odds over liquor regulations and prohibition for many years.

1867 07 01 British North America Act creates the Dominion of Canada from the provinces of Canada (Upper and Lower), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

1868 09 St-Ours’ new convent ( Soeurs de la Présentation-de-Marie) celebrates its opening with a concert inviting parishioners – almost all the town turns out. The program includes vocalists, choir and popular songs.
Shortly after the completion of his project, Curé Belanger dies (of a stroke) on Sept 26 at 74. The whole town is in mourning. 3,000 people attend his funeral. Jacques Denis
Michon is named the new Curé.

1869 02 05 The diocese decides to build a new church – but nothing is done for two years until agreement of a majority of francs tenanciers (personne pouvant exploiter une terre avec un bail à très longue durée) is obtained.
